Certification Reciprocity Process for Oklahoma School Counselors

To pursue certification reciprocity as a school counselor in Oklahoma when coming from another state, there are specific avenues and requirements to consider (see Oklahoma’s Certification Overview):

Standard Certification Reciprocity

Requirements:

  • Hold a current, valid School Counselor credential issued by another state’s Department of Education.

Background Checks:

  • Typically, a recent certification or dual fingerprinting (background check) is required unless already certified in Oklahoma. Refer to the most up-to-date information regarding fingerprinting/background checks here.

Documentation and Fees:

  • Official transcripts, copies of current credentials, and copies of passed examinations.
  • A $50 initial application fee is payable to the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Application Process:

  • Complete an initial application on the Oklahoma Department of Education Single Sign-On portal.
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
  • Provide a copy of your current, valid School Counselor credential.
  • Include copies of any examinations passed to satisfy requirements from your credentialing state.
  • Submit the background check details and pay the required fee.

Verification of State-Approved Teacher Education Program from Non-Oklahoma College/University

Requirements:

  • Completion of an approved teacher education program from a non-Oklahoma college/university.

Documentation:

  • Verification of state-approved teacher education program from non-Oklahoma college/university, official transcripts, copy of current credential, and copies of passed examinations (find Forms and Applications here).

Background Checks and Fees:

  • Same as the standard process mentioned above.

Application Process:

  • Submit verification of state-approved teacher education program from a non-Oklahoma college/university.
  • Follow the standard application process as mentioned above.

Review of Out-of-State Teacher Tests by OEQA

Requirements:

  • Passing teacher test(s) in another state.

Documentation:

  • Official transcripts, copies of current credentials, and copies of passed examinations (including acceptable test(s) determined by OEQA).

Background Checks and Fees:

  • Same as the standard process mentioned above.

Application Process:

  • Request a review of out-of-state teacher test(s) for comparability to Oklahoma tests by the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA).
  • OEQA will inform the Teacher Certification Office of acceptable test(s).
  • Follow the standard application process outlined above, including submission of acceptable test(s) determined by OEQA.
